THE GERMANS...
Oberleutnant Julius Neumann, Bf109 pilot of Geschwader 27.
Neumann fought through the French campaign but never experienced
a dogfight. Experience of his colleagues against RAF pilots over
Dunkirk taught these pilots to respect their adversaries, and his
first dogfight was over the Isle of Wight in August. It was
immediately obvious to the Germans that these men and machines
were an equal match for themselves.
Major Werner Moelders was commander of Geschwader 51. He fought
in Spain and emerged as the top scoring German. He maintained
this standing throughout the battle, claiming his 40 th. kill on
September 29 th.
Oberleutnant Hans Schmoller, Bf109 pilot of Geschwader 54 got the
chance to fly a captured Spitfire. He felt familiar with the
machine from the start, finding it easier to fly and land than
the 109. It's engine 'purred'. He did feel that the 109 was
faster in a dive and had better pilot visibility. Strangely, he
thought the Spitfire was better armed than the Bf109. The 109's
cannon were slow firing and not much use in dogfights whilst the
cowling machine guns were prone to stoppages.
Hauptmann Karl Ebbinghausen was shot down and killed in his Bf109
on August 16 th. He was commander of the II Gruppe of FG26.
There were, of course, many many more on both sides. These few
names are just a sample.
